Your Hubs Won't Make Money if Search Engines Can't Find Them
Backlinks are very important when it comes to making money on HubPages. Why? Backlinks are road maps that lead search engines to your HubPages. By building links back to your HubPages you are giving search engines instructions on how to get there. If your content is optimized with keywords, you may end up at the top of a search engines results. How do you accomplish linkbuilding that produces top placement results? There are many different sites that can be used for linkbuilding. I'm going to start off with the easiest forms.
- RSS Directories RSS feeds are used by many to keep up with certain topics. Many bloggers and journalists subscribe to certain keywords to receive fresh content throughout the day. Submit your hubpages rss feed to as many rss directories as possible. Most of the top rss directories have a high page rank. The best part is you only need to submit your rss feed once. However, be sure to ping your hubpages feed after publishing a new hub. The rss directories will pick them up soon after your ping.
- Social Bookmarking Sites Social bookmarking sites are a great way to share content with people that share similar interests. You also benefit from site's page rank. They also help your new hubs be indexed very quickly. Unfortunately, you have to submit them regularly. However, you can automate your social bookmarking which is a huge time saver!
- Forums There are hundreds of forums on the internet. Find a few forums that pertain to your hub's topic and link to one from your signature. Make sure you use the keyword as your anchor text. (This is why I always recommend you link your similar hubs to each other. That way, you only need to link to one of your hubs. The reader will easily follow your inbound linking to find the rest).
- Social Media Sites These are the easiest ways to share your hubs and get a link. Sites like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and FriendFeed will help your hubs get indexed almost immediately. I have all my social media accounts linked to each other, so that I post on all my accounts from one place. (I will be writing a hub about that time saving site. Look for it soon!)
- Article Directories These sites have high page rank, but most importantly Google LOVES them. Their favorite articles directories are ezinearticles.com, goarticles and articlesbase. The beauty of these sites is that other people can copy and paste your article on their site, creating another backlink. You can get hundreds of backlinks from one article! (The down side is that you have to write more original content.)
Creating backlinks to your hubs is not difficult. It is a process that will become easier with time. Don't forget, creating links is the same as creating a map that leads search engines to your hubs. Take action and make your hubs more profitable today!

Personally I prefer blog commenting and forum discussion. I find article submission too time consuming.
In term of participating in forums, I find that certain forums are not effective, since the visitors do not click on the links, and threads are not active.

@scheng You're right, article submission can be time consuming. Fortunately, I use two sites that semi automate the process. As far as forums go, I only use the most popular forums. They get traffic everyday and are visited by Google bots regularly. Will be sharing these resources in future hubpages. Stay tuned!
@seryhu It depends on how competitive the keyword is. Most of my keywords are very compettive, so I spend a lot of time link building. They are also very profitable. Why write about topics that require more links? I do it because that's what I know. If I could write about less competitive keywords, I would...
You miss out blog commenting. It is an easier method than article submission to directories.

Great info! Do you feel like its enough to just submit original content to the top 4 or 5 directories or does it make a real difference to submit to 100 lesser directories with article submission software?

The more backlinks you get, the better. Just try to use different titles and tags for each article directory. I made that mistake and it negated the submissions. The gurus never tell you that! Come to think of it, the gurus just want to sell you software without explaining how to use it...

Good tips. One thing to note: Many forums (most, in fact) have "no-follow" tags on their users' signature blocks, which means that links from there don't actually help with the search engines directly. Even so, this tactic is still useful as it encourages human visits (which you talked about), boosting your traffic and increasing the likelihood that one of those visitors will link to your site - hopefully with a followed link this time! :)

You are definitely spot on. Backlinks are like votes to your site. The more backlinks, the better ranking.
Yes I find it is better for more people to read the hubs when i use defferent tags when posting these links for backlinks. It all helps to get traffic and get higher up the search engines

back linking happens to be the sermon on every online writer's lips.
Back linking can only be effective depending on the quality of the site you are adding the back link to and page rank and other page and site analytics like Alexa and quantcast rank can also come into play.
Spreading links sporadically on every site could be considered as spam going by Google's new algorithm of rating sites based on PR and of course back links.

Backlinking is still important in Google's eyes however Google Caffeine started this year hinting that fresh content will be holding more weight than previous years. Backlinking will always be prominent in SEO regardless. Howelse will Google know you're an authority for your keyword/topic..

I've noticed a lot of older hubs that seem ignored by google. These hubs are PR n/a which must be quite difficult to achieve on Hubpages. My hubs all update to PR0 (and higher after Google updates) within days of publication. This hub points out some things that help to get indexed and there accrue PR. Nice work.
